Artist Biography
I was born and raised in Watertown, MA. I am a self taught painter, given my first set of paints for Christmas when I was 11 years old. My formative work with light and shadow and many of my texture techniques were learned from watching Bob Ross on PBS. When I was young my parents owned and operated an ice cream truck and during the summers I would sit in the park with them and paint the surrounding trees and rivers .
I graduated from Emerson College in 2000 with a degree in film. After living in Los Angeles for my last semester of school, I lost my taste for film and returned to the Boston area. Although I have had varying careers from bartender to office manager, I have always been a painter. By day I have an office job. At night I paint.
Artist Statement
My painting style is a mix of impressionism and surrealism. The subjects vary from total abstract forms to dreamlike cityscapes. My more abstract works tend to take the form of texture-obsessed, imaginary micro-organisms. These often begin with a simple desire to work with a particular color or to see the way 2 colors work together or in contrast to each other. More often than not these painting are started without much of a preconceived layout but by letting the composition and structure slowly come together throughout the painting process. These tend to take the shape of imaginary micro-ecosystems which allow me to employ my skill at, and love for, shadows and strange, sometimes unreal, light sources.
